About Static Machines | About Leyden Jars |
This machine is our restoration of an original built by an unidentified Parisian scientific instrument maker in 1888. The restoration required an 80-percent rebuild because disk, jars, and brushes were missing or damaged beyond repair. With its 16-inch diameter disks, this restored machine produces a 6-inch spark discharge at its output electrodes and is operated by a hand-crank mechanism. The original finish on the hard maple woodwork has been preserved. This machine is mounted on a 26 x 12 inch base, stands 27 inches high, and has a disk diameter of 16 inches. On a limited basis, PV Scientific Instruments restores original antique Wimshurst machines such as this one to working condition, using antique parts whenever possible. We also custom-build working reproductions of such machines for collectors, museums, and exhibitors. Our reproductions of Wimshurst machines are artisan-crafted according to our plans or yours, and priced according to size of disk and amount of detailing desired.
